Ernest Siddeley’s Cars

Citroen-Light-FifteenErnest Siddeley began his career in the motor industry in 1913 and, after a long and fascinating career and a lengthy retirement, he died last year. He was the son of John Siddeley who became Lord Kenilworth in the 1930s at roughly the same time that his Armstrong-Siddeley business was sold to Tommy Sopwith of Hawkers. He had, a few years previously, bought out Armstrong-Whitworth's interest in Armstrong-Siddeley so it was very much a family concern.

When talking to Ernest Siddeley shortly before his death I remembered his reluctance to recall the Hawker-Siddeley days, and indeed he was not there for long before resigning in 1937. What I did not know was that he continued to be an avid motorist and that he had a fascinating succession of cars. Thanks to his daughter, Audrey Bermingham, we now have details of many of them and insights into them from meticulous diaries that he kept of each.
