Design challenge
It is important that road users clearly understand signs for their safety and for the safety of others. The Department of Transport regulates the use of road signs. You can find more on their Website within the 'Roads and Vehicles' section
Create a mixed media visualisation or collage of a journey incorporating signs and symbols
Use a mix of different visual media such as drawing, paint, printing, and photos. You could include existing signage and symbols or you can create your own.
- Collect all your visual and other information in a sketchbook
- Experiment with composition of the journey images
- Select your materials to represent different parts of the journey
- Experiment with lines, patterns, shapes, textures and colours
Don’t forget to have a mini exhibition of all the work. You could invite the rest of the class to guess where your journey took place or you could provide clues in the display caption – just like an exhibition in a gallery or museum.
You may like to organise a class walk to create a class map.
Take a digital camera or mini sketchbooks to record signs and symbols along the way.
Using a hardboard base back at school, you could invite the children to create a three dimensional map of the local area.
Plaster of Paris impregnated gauze is great for landscaping along with self-hardening clay or plastic clay.
Features like hedges and trees can be created from bits of natural sponge painted shades of green. The rest is up to the class’ imagination!
