See the development of different types of road transport over the last 200 years and some of the most significant vehicles.
Self-propelled vehicles powered by fuel, and refinement in the production and use of materials coincided in the early 19th century to revolutionise road transport. Within 100 years, wooden horse-drawn vehicles were universally replaced by petrol driven vehicles made from steel.
