Road transport history

See the development of different types of road transport over the last 200 years and some of the most significant vehicles.

Self-propelled vehicles powered by fuel, and refinement in the production and use of materials coincided in the early 19^th century to revolutionise road transport. Within 100 years, wooden horse-drawn vehicles were universally replaced by petrol driven vehicles made from steel. Find out more in the Learning Zone activity 'Early Days of Public Transport.'
